About Spencer

My work consists of cloudscapes, seascapes and landscapes.
These paintings study the detail that is easy to overlook; the beauty above where we tend to set our eyes. My paintings are studies of atmosphere and the ever-changing relationship between light and the land.

I admire the Hudson River School as well as J. M. W. Turner’s atmospheric images, and the dramatic clouds of Andreas Archenbach. More recently, I have been inspired by the mountain images of Rudolf Stiengel and Gerhard Richter’s cloud and landscape paintings.

While landscapes are more traditionally representational images, the scale, chiaroscuro, composition, and use of color in contemporary landscapes influences my work.
These personal impressions of nature have become my focus – particularly in the context of our shrinking world and dwindling natural resources.
